What is Run and Recycle?
“Run and Recycle” addresses the environmental impact of fast fashion, which contributes to excessive carbon emissions and textile waste. The fashion industry’s carbon footprint exceeds that of international flights and shipping combined. In the EU alone, textile purchases generated significant carbon dioxide emissions per person. Athletes, who consume three times more clothing and shoes than the average European, are particularly affected.
The initiative not only educates athletes, coaches, and sports workers on textile waste management but also stimulates physical activity. Utilizing the most affordable and accessible form of exercise – running – the project encourages individuals to take part in sustainable practices. It aims to establish a network of 50 sports clubs prioritizing environmental values and develop guidelines for textile recycling. By raising public awareness, promoting “slow fashion,” and encouraging textile reuse, Run and Recycle seeks to stimulate recycling efforts and mitigate environmental harm.
Why Run and Recycle?
"The "Run and Recycle" project is essential because it addresses the substantial environmental impact of the fast fashion industry, particularly in the context of sports. Unlike other nature protection initiatives, this project uniquely targets athletes, who consume significantly more textiles, and integrates environmental education with physical activity. By promoting "slow fashion," textile recycling, and sustainable practices within a network of sports clubs, "Run and Recycle" not only raises awareness but also creates actionable solutions to mitigate the ecological footprint of the fashion and sports industries."
